چکیده

Parasitic antennas are much lower in cost and complexity than conventional smart antennas. For this reason, they may be considered for use at the portable station. In this paper we study the capacity of a spacedivision-multiple-access (SDMA) system when n element switched parasitic antenna arrays (SPAA) are used for this purpose. As in [1], dynamic slot allocation (DSA) is used with a conventional smart antenna at the basestation. We first present analytic and simulation results which suggest the improvements in static capacity performance possible using this approach. Results show that the system capacity can be significantly improved with a small number of parasitic elements. We then then present results using measurements taken at McMaster University using an 8-element circular basestation antenna array and a 4-element switched-parasitic antenna array. The basestation array was used to collect spatial channel soundings in various indoor locations. We also propose several dynamic TDMA/SDMA slot allocation algorithms, which vary in their complexity and achieved performance. It is shown that significant improvements in capacity are possible using the proposed technique.

Capacity Enhancement in Wireless Networks using Directional Antennas

One of the biggest drawbacks of the wireless environment is the limited bandwidth. However, the users sharing this limited bandwidth have been increasing considerably. SDMA technique which entails using directional antennas allows to increase the capacity of a wireless network by separating users in the medium. In this paper, it has been presented how the capacity can be enhanced while the mean...

Wireless Access with Smart Antennas and SDMA

One of the most important challenges with respect to wireless access is the limited capacity of the air interface which is due to the fact that the available transmission bandwidth is finite. Since the number of wireless subscribers is still growing rapidly and the desire for higher data rates is rising – partially due to an ever growing popularity of the Internet – a more efficient use of freq...

On Multiuser Power Region of Fading Multiple-Access Channel with Multiple Antennas

This paper is concerned with the fading multiple-input multiple-output multiple-access channel (MIMOMAC) with multiple receive antennas at the base station (BS) and multiple transmit antennas at each mobile terminal (MT). Two multiple-access techniques are considered for scheduling transmissions from each MT to the BS at the same frequency, which are space-division multiple-access (SDMA) and ti...

Indoor SDMA Capacity Using A Smart Antenna Basestation

[email protected] Abstract— In this paper we consider the capacity of a set of portable stations sharing a single indoor radio channel. The stations communicate with a basestation which is equipped with a smart antenna operating in multibeam SDMA/TDMA mode. Both theoretical models and measured data from an experimental testbed are presented. The experimental system operates at 1.86 GHz and uses ...

A New Business Dimension: SDMA and Intelligent Antennas

Space division multiple access (SDMA) is a promising technique useful for increasing capacity, reducing interference and improving overall wireless communication link quality. With a large-scale penetration expected for wireless Internet, the radio link will require significant reduction in cost and increase in capacity, benefits that the proper exploitation of the spatial dimension can offer. ...
